Changeover reduction and higher production efficiency with the SMED method
A manufacturing company producing plastic parts for the automotive industry asked our team to increase the efficiency of their injection molding machines and of the operators’ work. We decided to apply the SMED method (Single Minute Exchange of Die), thus significantly reducing tool exchange time, cutting batch production costs and reducing inventory.

Challenges
The customer's pain points and needs
- non-standardized procedure for tool exchange
- a lot of unproductive work during exchange
- long machine changeover time
- low production efficiency
- high inventory

02
solution
As part of the SMED method, we recommended and implemented these changes:
- better work organisation
- identifying and eliminating unproductive tasks
- standardisation of the work procedure for the watering of the form
- unification of the machine ejectors
- standardisation of the form parameters
